Practical Planning Tip: Searching For Deals!

September 06, 2024

Another question I recently received was as follows: “I look for a deal whenever I can in most areas of life. This includes when buying clothes, furniture, food, and other things for the house. Yet, I’m still just getting by financially. Any suggestions?”

My suggestion is to stop buying so much stuff! "Getting a deal" still means you are spending money that you clearly don't have. Obviously, you need clothes and food. However, what type of clothes and food are you buying? If you are having cash flow troubles, you should wear clothes until they disintegrate on your body and when you do need something you should go to Costco or Walmart. Go shopping for food at a discount grocery score, like a Lidl or Kol Save or Bingo if you keep kosher. In terms of furniture, few options are as cheap as Ikea. For those who are putting their nose up and scoffing at these suggestions, I have a message for you: This attitude is why you are broke! Finding more deals will not lead to more wealth. Spending less money and investing your savings will lead to more wealth. One day, after years of proper discipline and career growth, you will be able to buy designer clothes, fancy furniture, or groceries at Pomegranate! Until then, shop prudently and stop looking for more deals!
