American Jewish History Month: Recognizing Steven Mnuchin

May 26, 2025

The month of May is American Jewish History Month, so for this entire month I will continue share the stories of important Jewish figures in American finance. Today, I will share the story of Steven Mnuchin, an investment banker, film producer, and former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.

Steve Mnuchin was born on December 21, 1962, in New York City. He is the son of Robert Mnuchin who was a partner at Goldman Sachs in charge of equity trading and a member of the management committee

Mnuchin graduated from Yale University and began his career at Goldman Sachs, where he worked for 17 years, eventually becoming the firm’s Chief Information Officer.

After leaving Goldman Sachs in 2002, Mnuchin founded several hedge funds and launched Dune Entertainment, a film production company that financed major Hollywood films, including Avatar and X-Men. He later acquired IndyMac Bank, renaming it OneWest Bank, which became controversial for its foreclosure practices during the 2008 financial crisis.

In 2016, Mnuchin joined Donald Trump’s presidential campaign as National Finance Chairman, playing a key role in fundraising efforts. Following Trump’s election, Mnuchin was appointed Secretary of the Treasury, where he helped implement the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, reducing corporate tax rates and advocating for deregulation. He also played a significant role in COVID-19 economic relief efforts, overseeing stimulus programs and negotiations for financial aid packages.

His tenure as Treasury Secretary was marked by economic policy shifts, tax reforms, and financial controversies.

Mnuchin has remained active in finance and politics since leaving office, founding Liberty Strategic Capital, a private equity firm focused on technology and cybersecurity investments.
