American Jewish History Month: Recognizing Bill Ackman

May 07, 2025

The month of May is American Jewish History Month, so for this entire month I will continue share the stories of important Jewish figures in American finance. Today, I will discuss William Ackman who is the founder and chief executive officer of Pershing Square Capital where he is a prominent an activist investor.

Bill Ackman, born on May 11, 1966, in Chappaqua, New York and is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.. He was raised in a family involved in real estate, Ackman developed an early interest in business and finance. He attended Harvard College and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Ackman began his career in finance by co-founding the investment firm Gotham Partners in 1992. However, his most significant impact came in 2004 when he launched Pershing Square Capital Management, a hedge fund known for its activist investing approach. Ackman built a reputation as a high-conviction investor, taking large stakes in companies and pushing for strategic changes to unlock shareholder value. His firm has managed billions of dollars in assets and has been involved in high-profile investments in companies like Wendy’s, Target, and Chipotle.

Ackman is a formidable force in finance, known for his analytical rigor and willingness to take bold positions.

Beyond investing, Ackman is also a philanthropist, donating millions to education and public health initiatives. Importantly, Ackman has expressed public support for Israel, and he has been vocal against antisemitism on college campuses working to hold these universities accountable for turning a blind eye to this type of hate.
